In a year when quinoa became a household word and everything edible was suddenly gluten-free, Lafayette cousins John Peterson and Collin Cormier launched a line of sodas flavored with Louisiana sugar cane. Four flavors of Swamp Pop, named for Louisiana’s unique genre of music made up of R&B, country, and Cajun music, hit local store shelves in 2013. Today, six flavors are sold year-round not only in local markets like Alexander’s in Baton Rouge and Murray’s Superette in St. Amant, but in Cost Plus World Market as well as Cracker Barrel Old Country Stores nationwide.
