Harvest Days at October Pop-Up Farmers Market

_13749DSC_0519The first 50 people to attend Alexander’s Highland Market’s October Pop-Up Farmers Market on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 18111 Highland Market Drive and visit Southern Art’s booth will receive a free bottle of Southern Art No. 1 Handcrafted Hot Sauce, a local product recently named a Martha Stewart American Made 2014 Food Finalist.

southernartIn addition, Iverstine Family Farms of Kentwood will take pre-orders for farm-raised Thanksgiving turkeys as well as sell fresh pork and broilers, Star Nursery of Belle Chasse will sell fresh Satsumas and persimmons, and Three Brothers Farm of Lafayette Parish will introduce its raw Louisiana cane sugar and cane syrup to the Baton Rouge market. Beekeeper Bobby Frierson will bring his Louisiana Gold honey from Livingston Parish, as well as an observation hive for hobbyists and children alike, and Catherine Champagne, a nutrition expert and professor with Pennington Biomedical Research Center, will discuss healthy eating with seasonal produce like pumpkins and apples, as well as share a few recipes for fall cooking.

Other vendors include Luckett Farms; Andi Lynn’s Elderberry Syrup; Most Delightful Foods; Tres Bien Que; 2 Sisters’ Salsa; Ruth’s Hummus; Elkarita; Cafeciteaux; Your Way Cuisines’ gluten-free gumbo mixes; Ivy’s Pride Tamales, Sweet Elizabeth Cakes; Fresina’s Italian Specialties; AmazinGraze Creamery; Re:; Malco’s Magnificent Salsa; Eden’s Natural Soaps; Woodworks by J.W.; Dr. Sam’ Essential Lotions; and handcrafted cypress birdhouses and coolers by Don Guitrau.

The Farmers Market is free and open to the community. Alexander’s will grill outdoors and provide free face painting for children.
